Your company details - display or pay!

Many businesses may have thought that they didn't need to show their company registration details on their website, since they were not offering an online sales facility.

That, however, would be a mistake - and possibly an expensive one.

In a January 2007 update to the Companies Act, it was made clear that every business website must include the postal and e-mail address of the business. In addition, if the business is a registered company, the site must display the registration number, place of registration, registered office address and VAT number, regardless of whether the company conducts online sales or not.

What’s more, since e-mails are construed by the Act as "business letters", the same details should appear on these too. So why risk a hefty fine? Make sure that your company details appear on all your business communications, traditional or electronic.
